Making soap is a fun hobby you can turn into a profitable business.
Making soap is a creative hobby you can turn into a successful business because everyone needs soap. Every bar must eventually dissolve, so every customer can be a steady customer, provided you are a good soap maker. As with anything else, quality will be the determining factor in the success of your business. If you make a good product, and capture sufficient public interest, your business should thrive.
Step 1Perfect your soap recipes. Develop three to five kinds you and others really like. Do not attempt to sell any until you have consistent recipes that come out beautiful every time. Spend time learning your craft. This is the key to your success.

Step 2Keep your regular job and work your business in your off hours, if you have insufficient savings to go full-time. Fortunately fairs, festivals and other events where you can offer your soaps are often on the weekends, so you can do both jobs.
Step 3Establish your infrastructure. You will need to set up a Paypal account or merchant account with your bank. Of course you will also need phone/cell phone, computer and Internet access.

Step 4Call your county clerk's office to find out the necessary licenses. Some cities and counties require a home business license; others do not, as long as you are not opening your home to the general public.

Step 5 Create your promotional materials. You should always have a business card as well as brochure or catalog detailing your product line. Display it also on a website that gives customers the ability to order. Either design the site yourself via online tutorials or hire someone.

Step 6Create your packaging and display materials. Small cellophane bags are popular, as are small cardboard boxes. Create an interesting label that includes the ingredients.

Step 7Set up a handwashing station at farmers' markets, fairs, festivals and other community gatherings. People are often in the mood to try something new at these events. Give all purchasers a catalog or brochure that lists your web address. Start a soap subscription option so every month a new shipment arrives for your customers.
